Idlewild at 114: Black Place-Making, Culture, and Community in Rural Michigan
This exhibition explores Idlewild, Michigan, as a distinctive African American cultural landscape sustained through collective vision, entrepreneurship, leisure, artistic expression, and community resilience.
Rather than treating Idlewild as only a historic resort, the project centers the people, relationships, traditions, and social practices that made a northern rural environment a nationally significant center of Black life. It brings Black leisure, property ownership, business development, cultural fellowship, kinship, memory, and seasonal ritual into the same frame.

Ronald J. Stephens is Professor of African American Studies in Purdue University’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
His pioneering work on Black tourism, leisure spaces, and community formation helped establish historic Idlewild, Michigan, as an essential site in African American cultural and social history. His research also spans Garveyism, Black internationalism, racial injustice, biography, and resistance.
Across books, teaching, public history, and media, Dr. Stephens pairs archival depth with an adaptable public voice—professional without becoming distant, pragmatic without losing imagination, and always grounded in lived experience.
